Asean Countries

  1. After troubles in SAARC (due to China- Pakistan affection), ASEAN unity is on the rocks. Reason looks the same, the People’s Republic of China.
  2. ASEAN is a regional organization of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei ,Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam and SAARC member states include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India ,Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  3. On Oct 20, 2016, Philippines president on his trip to Beijing called off all its relations with the USA including military and the economy.
  4. It means the mutual defense treaty between USA-Philippines is suspended for now and perhaps annulled later.
  5. Philippines now to solve disputes with China regarding South China Sea by mutual talks. In 2012, China seized the disputed Scarborough Shoal and denied Philippine fishermen access to its fishing grounds.
  6. Filipino Prez gives a call for Russia, China and Philippines together against the USA.
  7. Philippines is also a member of Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) is a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) by china, thus greater Chino-Filipino bonhomie in the future.
  8. Vietnam is an another country in disputes with China over islands in South China Sea and a member of Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), also an FTA floated by USA.
  9. The other side is that if ASEAN countries are willing to settle down their disputes with China amicably and through mutual talks, its welcome as it would lessen the tensions in the region.
  10. But its unlikely USA would let it happen and now would try to forge stronger alliances with remaining countries in the region so that China doesn’t ‘consolidate’ its power.
  11. The Asia Pacific would now emerge as the hot bed for power struggle which would be keenly watched.
