kalmadi and chautala
Let’s Join hands and spoil the sport!

  1. Politicians Abhay Singh Chautala and Suresh Kalmadi have been made honorary life president of the Indian Olympic Association(IOA) by the body itself.
  2. The Indian Olympic Association is the body responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Olympic Games, Asian Games and other international athletic meets and for managing the Indian teams at the events.
  3. It also acts as the Indian Commonwealth Games Association, responsible for selecting athletes to represent India at the Commonwealth Games.
  4. Kalmadi has served as IOA president from 1996 to 2011 and was jailed for 10 months for his involvement in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games corruption scandal but later released on bail.
  5. Chautala has also been chargesheeted in a disproportionate assets case.
  6. It would be so interesting to know that what triggered the IOA to appoint these tainted and chargesheeted people as it’s President , that too for the life.
  7. Neither they have been any recognized sportsperson in their lifetime and nor brought any international or national recognition to the sports during their  tenure as the Presidents. Rather International Olympic Council (IOC) had suspended IOA in 2012 when Chautala was it’s President. Bizzare decision!
  8. However keeping the policy of reactionary suspension alive, now the Sports Ministry has suspended the IOA for this decision, which means that till the time they are suspended, no financial and other assistance would be given to IOA.
  9. These suspensions are piecemeal approaches and don’t address the main problem ailing the sports of the country.
  10. Sports bodies are run and managed by everyone in the country except the sportsperson.
  11. For example, earlier Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) by India Cements managing director N. Srinivasan when the betting case happened and put Cricket to shame, and what do the persons like Sharad Pawar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Rajeev Shukla  and Arun Jaitley had to do with the sports bodies?
  12. They just want to be remain visible among the youth, garner the votes and make money, at the cost of youth, at the cost of culture of sports and also at the cost of morale of sportspersons who made India proud at various international sporting events but now are neglected and not given due recognition. No wonder why former athlete Anju Bobby George decided to step down as the president of the Kerala Sports Council.
  13. During the recently held Olympics in Rio(Brazil), Politicians like sports minister at the Union and the state were found sporting selfies with players rather ensuring that the adequate arrangements have been made.
  14. Sports Minister Vijay Goel was also reprimanded by the Olympic organisers for the “aggressive and rude” behaviour as he entered out-of-access  areas for selfies. The organisers even threatened to cancel his accreditation in a letter written to India’s Chef-de-mission.

Selfie at Rio, Vote in India!

  15. The Physiotherapist for the Gymnast Deepa Karmakar was called from India at the last moment as her request that her long-time physiotherapist should accompany to Rio was deemed ‘wasteful’ by Sports Authority of India!
  16. Then whose visit was deemed ‘fruitful’ ?
  17. India finished 67th on the medal tally, winning a silver and a bronze medal in a country of 1.3 billion. Is it the fruit?
  18. Sports can’t only be cultivated by promotion of Chak De, Sultan or Dangal. The problem need immediate and dedicated attention.
  19. To start with, complete insulation of politics with sports is needed and also insulation of sports with politics. Neither Arun Jaitley would do justice to Delhi Cricket, nor Sachin Tendulkar to Rajya Sabha. Choice is binary, Loss is colossal!
