1. NASA revealed that it has discovered 7 Earth-sized planets in a single solar system. Three of these are in the famous “Goldilocks zone”, meaning they are not too hot and not too cold, therefore they can sustain life.
  2. The planets were detected using Nasa’s Spitzer Space Telescope and several ground-based observatories.
  3. The seven exoplanets were all found revolving in tight formation around an ultracool dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1.
  4. Exoplanet or Extrasolar planet is a planet that orbits a star other than the Sun. There have been 3,583 exoplanets in 2,688 planetary systems and 603 multiple planetary systems have been confirmed so far.js121434226_pa_trappist-1-solar-system-large_trans_nvbqzqnjv4bqkg1sgsww5lsqoollf0icotqzreloofxwenrb-oseshu
  5. Estimates of these 7 planets’ mass also indicate that they are rocky planets, rather than being gaseous like Jupiter. 3 of these 7 planets are in the habitable zone of the star, known as 1-e, 1-f and 1-g, and may even have oceans on the surface.habitable
  6. The researchers believe that TRAPPIST-1f in particular is the best candidate for supporting life. It’s a bit cooler than Earth, but could be suitable with the right atmosphere and enough greenhouse gases.
  7. According to an analysis of data from the Kepler space mission in 2013, there could be as many as 40 billion habitable planets in our galaxy alone. In 2015, a NASA scientist estimated there were 1 billion just like Earth.
  8. To reach our new Earthly neighbours orbiting TRAPPIST 1, we would have to travel at the speed of light for 39 years. In other words, travelling with a speed of 3 lakh km per sec for 39 years!
  9. If a person were on one of the planets, everything would look a lot darker than usual. The amount of light heading to our eye would be about 200 times less than what we get from the sun. It would be comparable to what we can see at sunset.
  10. The sun, TRAPPIST-1 would also look about 10 times bigger from the planets than what sun looks from the earth, despite the fact that it is in fact only 8 per cent as big. If Sun is taken as a basket ball, TRAPPIST-1 is of the size of a golf ball.trappist 1
  11. Does life exist there? If earth like conditions do prevail as it is being claimed, there can be no denial about aliens.
  12. Moreover, TRAPPIST-1 burns hydrogen so slowly that it will live for another 10 trillion years – more than 700 times longer than the Universe has existed so far, which is arguably enough time for life to evolve.
  13. Aliens have been observed in the past as well but their presence has not been confirmed. As per physicist Stephen Hawking, if aliens discover Earth, they are likely to conquer and colonise it! So let them stay away. Earth already has numerous aliens, discover India!
