longest tunnel

  1. Prime Minister on April 2, inaugurated India’s longest road tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
  2. The all weather tunnel would cut short the journey between the two cities by 30 km and reduce travel time by 2 hours.
  3. The distance between Chenani and Nashri (between two ends of the tunnel) will now be 10.9 km, instead of the existing 41 km. The tunnel has costed 3,700 crore to a private developer.
  4. The tunnel, at an altitude of 1,200 meters, is a part of National Highway Authority of India’s (NHAI) project between Jammu and Srinagar, along the National Highway 44.
  5. The tunnel boasts of features like Integrated Traffic Control System (ITCS), Video Surveillance System, FM broadcast System, Entrance Detection Control System and Active Firefighting System.
  6. Reasonable toll tax would be charged from the commuters. Light motor vehicles will have to pay Rs. 55 for a one way trip and Rs. 85 for a two-way journey.
  7. Benefits of the tunnel are immense.
  8. It will save fuel worth nearly Rs. 99 crore a year or Rs. 27 lakh worth of fuel per day by cutting down on travel time, waiting time and jams on National Highway-1 A.
  9. The connectivity in the remote areas can help transform the life of the region in the hills. The villagers will now have better access to market and essential services.
  10. It will also boost trade and tourism and increase revenue in the state of JnK. Terrorism would definitely take a back seat when prosperity comes via tourism!
  11. Development in Valley is the best antidote to the problems like Hurriyat, Separatists, various Kanhaiyas, like of that of JNU who demand azadi from hypothetical gulaami and the terrorists activities.
  12. By bypassing Kud, Patnitop and Batote, the tunnel not only reduces the distance but also helps in the conservation of ecologically sensitive Patnitop area.
  13. Moreover you will also not loose mobile networks. However it doesn’t matter much as Jio’s offer is not going to last long and we don’t need services which are to be paid for!
