  1. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has released the Global Wage Report (GWR) 2016-17.
  2. The report shows that India is among the countries with one of the worst Gender wage gaps in the world.
  3. The gender wage gap is the difference between men’s and women’s average aggregate wages . The gap is due to a variety of causes such as education, preferred job and industry, amount of work experience, breaks in employment etc.
  4. As per the report, India has wage gap exceeding 30%. This means that for the same work and position, male employees would receive wages which would be 30% higher than the female counterpart.
  5. Among major economies, surprisingly, only South Korea has worse gap than India at 37%.
  6. Singapore has the wage gap of only 3% which is the lowest in the world.gender gap in the world
  7. In India, the percentage of women in the lowest paid wage labour group is 60%, where as only 15% of the women are the part of the group which are the highest wage earners. Across various sectors such as construction, banking etc. female managers receive less than male counterpart. Even in Bollywood, heroines are paid less than the heroes.
  8. The percent of women among the wage earners is also less in South Asia at 38%. It means among the total wage earners, men constitute 62%.
  9. As per the IMF, India’s national income would increase by 27 per cent if the participation of women in the workforce matches the level of men.
  10. Traditionally women participation in the workforce have been restricted in various societies, as a result of which, their participation in the work and the wage earned have also been affected.
  11. The status is changing fast as more and more girls and women are coming out for study, work and other activities which were so far reserved for men only.
  12. Even in the non conventional areas such as sports like Wrestling, the women participation has increased. Movie Dangal which was released yesterday shows the same.
  13. The government is also committed to give the due attention to the fact that if more and more women participate which is not only good for the economy, but also for the society of the country. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme therefore needs serious implementation.
